Publishing With FrontPage 2000Though FutureQuest®
does not support FrontPage Extensions, for use with the
"webbot" components, you are still able to use FrontPage
for the development and publishing of your web site.
There are also many ways to accomplish the "webbot"
features without the extensions. Visit the Pre-Installed
Scripts section of aota.net to find a few of the
alternatives, such as mail forms and counters,
already pre-installed on the FutureQuest®
Servers for you. This tutorial will walk you through the
steps required to publish your web site using FrontPage
2000.
To begin publishing your web page with
FrontPage 2000, follow these steps:
1.
From the file menu at the top of FrontPage, Click
File and then select Publish Web.
2. A new pop-up
screen will appear. Click on the Options
button.
3. On this screen
enter your FTP address or choose Browse. Using the
example in the image below, replace that in blue with your domain name, and
make sure the %2F is there (shown in red). The rest of the FTP location
should look the same as it does in the image below. The
path in the image below is showing FrontPage exactly
where to upload your files, including which directory.
4. On the same screen select your options
as shown below.
5. Once you have verified
everything is correct, click on the
Publish button.
6. A message will
appear alerting you to the fact that the server does not
support FrontPage extensions. Click OK.
7. Click Publish a second
time.
8. It is now time to
enter your account Username and Password This
information is provided within your activation letter
and is the same username and password you would use when
entering your Command 'n' Control Panel. Once you have
entered the correct information, click the OK button.
9. A screen should
now appear showing you the progress of the files that
are being transferred.
10. And that's it! The program should now let
you know that the pages have been published
successfully. Click Done.

Tip: When
publishing with FrontPage, the program will compare
files on your web site with the files on your hard
drive, and offer to delete files on the server not on
your hard drive. Each time its loaded and FrontPage
finds files that are on your server and not on your hard
drive, such as your stats
directory, it will ask if you want to delete the files.
Since you DO NOT want to delete your stats
directory a way to keep it from asking this is to create
a dummy directory on your hard drive. When you publish
the web, tell FrontPage not to publish any sub
directory. The details for instructing FrontPage to
ignore files in the /stats subdirectory are as follows:
- Open your web. Make sure the 'Folder List' is
visible. (From the View menu, select Folder List)
- Right click a blank space in the Folder List and
select 'New Folder'. Name the new folder 'stats'
(without the quotes and all lower case).
- Right click on the new stats
folder you just created and select 'Convert to Web'.
Click 'Yes' in response to the question 'Are you sure
you want to do this?' Aside from a few maintenance
folders and files created by FrontPage, the stats
folder on your hard drive will be empty and will stay
empty, i.e. you do not need to import any files from
your web site.
- When you are ready to publish your web, select
'Publish' from the 'File' menu.
- In the 'Publish Web' dialog, make sure the
'Include subwebs' checkbox is clear (i.e. unchecked).
If you don't see the 'Include subwebs' checkbox, click
on the 'Options' button.
- Click 'Publish'. You're done.
The
same procedure can be used to cause FrontPage to ignore
any other subdirectories you have in your /www
subdirectory; for example any IRMs that are maintained
separately. In the case of IRMs, you could also make
real subwebs on your hard drive, in which case you could
decide you want to 'Include subwebs' when you publish.
For the odd pages on your web--like 404.html and
robots.txt--it is easiest to import it into your web on
your hard drive, to prevent FrontPage from offering to
delete them.
